AFCEA SCHOLARSHIPS BRIDGE THE STEM EDUCATION GAP

Economics experts concur and statistics confirm that the U.S. needs to boost its tech-savvy work force. STEM expertise is a must to remain competitive in a global economy that depends on technology. However, with the cost of higher education soaring, talented students must navigate the gap between pursuing and affording an education addresses this issue.

The AFCEA Educational Foundation helps bridge this gap. Scholarships assist people engaged in information management, communications and intelligence efforts and foster excellence in education particularly in the STEM disciplines related to command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

The foundation recently announced the winners of its Intelligence, Afghanistan and Iraq War Veterans, Disabled Veterans and Cyber Security scholarships. Descriptions about these scholarships are available at www.afcea.org/education/scholarships..

Receiving AFCEA Intelligence merit scholarships:

•Daniel Adams from Clermont, Florida, a junior studying computer science at Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA
•Marcus I. Brumfield from Terry, Mississippi, a junior studying computer science at Tougaloo College, MS..
•Heather L. Greenley from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a graduate student studying global security and intelligence at New York University, NY.
•Eric J. Saunders from Springboro, Ohio, a graduate student studying information technology in the Intelligence Graduate Program at Capitol College, Laurel, MD.
•Ian P. Stern from Newberry, Florida, a doctorate candidate studying electronic engineering and physics at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Colorado, and conducting research at the Air Force Space Command.

Receiving AFCEA Afghanistan and Iraq War Veterans scholarships, cosponsored by the AFCEA Educational Foundation and the AFCEA NOVA Chapter:

•CW4 Kenneth G. Biddulph, USA, from Enterprise, Alabama, a junior studying aeronautics at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide, Daytona Beach, FL.
•Staff Sgt. Roger B. Floro, USAF, from Omaha, Nebraska, a junior studying computer network systems at Bellevue University, NE.
•Antonio R. Moore, a U.S. Navy veteran from Huntsville, Alabama, is a junior studying electrical engineering at the University of Huntsville, AL.
•Brandy E. Tamplain, a U.S. Air Force veteran from Clovis, New Mexico, is a sophomore studying aerospace, security, intelligence, and information assurance at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide, Dayton Beach, FL.

The Disabled War Veterans Scholarship, funded by contributions from Microsoft and its employees, the AFCEA Camp Pendleton Chapter, and the AFCEA Educational Foundation, was awarded to Kendall D. Robinson, a U.S. Army veteran from Colorado Springs, CO. Robinson is a junior studying technology management at Regis University, Colorado Springs.

AFCEA Educational Foundation Cyber Security scholarships are being awarded to:

•Kiara D. Jones from Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, a senior studying computer information systems at Notre Dame of Maryland University, Baltimore.
•Michael R. Richardson from Annapolis, Maryland, a sophomore studying computer science at Villanova University, Villanova, PA
•Emily J. Scheerer from Columbia, Maryland, a senior studying computer science at the University of Maryland. Scheerer also was awarded this scholarship in her junior year.
•Kira A. Shuman from Fort Knox, Kentucky, is a graduate student studying cybersecurity through online courses offered by Bellevue University, NE.
•A1C David Turner, USAF, from San Angelo, Texas, is a junior studying computer science and specializing in software engineering at Park University, Parkville, MO.
