AAAS Connects People with Disabilities with STEM Opportunities

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks to “advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people.” Its Project on Science, Technology and Disability and the Entry Point! program identifies and recruits students with apparent and non-apparent disabilities studying in science, engineering, mathematics, computer science and some fields of business for internship and co-op opportunities.
“Entry Point! knows students with disabilities who have demonstrated high motivation, persistence and achievement in STEM fields are eager to work in science and engineering research and development. Our mentors work with students on future undergraduate coursework, plans for graduate study, and/or employment,“ according to the AAAS and Entry Point! program coordinators.
Entry Point! has established partnerships with a variety of Fortune 500 companies and government agencies who offer paid, 10- to 12-week internships that offer encouragement and can help strengthen skills and clarify career goals. Program partners pay stipends and provide assistive technology and other reasonable accommodations. Travel funds and recommendations about accessible housing and transportation may also be provided to students who are relocating for the summer. Internships via the program are located throughout the country.
In addition to problem-solving skills, Entry Point! partners are seeking strong technical and communication skills. “They understand teamwork and a positive attitude are critical for a corporation or agency to survive in today’s global market. In an internship you’ll have an opportunity to practice the skills you’re learning in your class projects and presentations,” say program coordinators.
Your perspectives, as a student with a disability, and your ideas for new invention and discovery will be critical to shaping the success of science and engineering in the years to come. As you participate in work and research internships, you will learn to more effectively contribute your knowledge and leadership to this effort. You’ll have the opportunity to help revolutionize the world in technology, space explorations, climate change, health and aviation,” they add.
Entry Point! internships are competitive and selected individuals will be given an assignment that complements their major and builds upon their talents.
“We inquire about your disability as a means of confirming your eligibility to participate in Entry Point! The program reaches out to students with disabilities because so many have not been afforded the opportunity to participate in internship programs. The goal of Entry Point! is to increase the diversity of the science and engineering field by making it accessible to students with disabilities,” notes program coordinators.
