Debra L. Lee, Chairman & CEO, BET Networks
Debra L. Lee is chairman and CEO of BET Networks, a unit of Viacom Inc. and the leading provider of entertain ment for the African-American audience and consumers of black culture globally. Lee oversees one of the most influential multi platform media companies in the world, including several cable television networks, digital offerings, and Centric, a 24-hour music and entertainment network designed for black women. “A diverse workforce constantly adds new perspectives and helps BET fulfill its mission to respect, reflect, and elevate our audience,” Lee says. “The Directors Guild of America named BET the top network for hiring women and minority directors across all of TV in the 2014-2015 season. By having diverse voices in front of the camera and behind the scenes, we can ensure that the stories we tell are relatable to the audience. When the audience feels that authenticity they connect with the characters, whether it’s our hit drama “Being Mary Jane,” starring Gabrielle Union, or our hit comedy “Real Husbands of Hollywood,” starring Kevin Hart.”
On her way to breaking through the glass ceiling, Lee was offered three pieces of advice. “Be prepared for what you’re going to do; learn as much as you can about the position. That will take you a long way in terms of self-confidence.” Second, “realize that you have as much to offer as any man in the company. You have your own ideas and you shouldn’t be afraid to stand up and let your ideas be known.” Finally, take some risks. “Tell yourself, ‘OK – I haven’t done this job yet, but I’m smart and I can learn it.’”
To young professionals embarking on their career paths, Lee tenders the following: “(1) Stay in school and get a great education. College is a time to learn and try different things. It’s not just to prepare for what you want to do. Go to college and figure out what you’re really interested in doing. (2) Find something that you’re passionate about. Whether it’s a cause, a company, or an industry, make sure you do what you love and what you really care about. (3) Be true to yourself, your values, your beliefs, and what you want to accomplish and you will always make the right decision. Listen to your inner voice.”
