Howard University Student Receives Scholarship from EOP’s STEM Diversity Career Expo Sponsor

Emmoni M. Hankins, a Howard University student, recently received a $500 check and a certificate from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security.
As a Corporate Silver Sponsor of EOP’s STEM Diversity Career Expo in Washington, DC in June, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS) was given the chance to award this scholarship to a deserving college student.
DS is the law enforcement and security arm of the U.S. Department of State. It bears the core responsibility for providing a safe environment to conduct American diplomacy.
DS, careers.state.gov/ds, is the most widely represented U.S. law enforcement and security organization in the world, and protects people, property and information at State Department facilities around the globe.
To achieve this mission DS works to discover and mitigate terrorist threats to American lives and facilities, mounting international investigations, and generating innovations in cybersecurity and physical security engineering.
The Washington, DC-based agency presented Hankins with the scholarship and award that recognized her academic and extracurricular achievements as a student at Howard University in DC.
A graduate of Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology in Petersburg, VA, Hankins is an inspiring individual who is currently a senior at Howard University, working toward her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, with further aspirations to earn a master’s degree in biomedical engineering.
She’s applied her coursework, passion for helping others and personal skills to several internships so far, including as a Bank of America student leader, a Virginia Secretary of Education intern and Wellness Engagement Research Project-Virginia Commonwealth University youth leader. She’s also worked as a camp counselor for 4-H Youth Development Movement, and served as a youth leader for the American Red Cross and YMCA.
Hankins’ distinguished service and outstanding achievements have been recognized by numerous professional, civic and church organizations on local, state and national levels.
Some of her awards in the past few years include a Student Leadership Award from the Virginia Congress of Parent and Teachers in recognition and appreciation of outstanding leadership and efforts through the community on behalf of children and youth; a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Parent Teacher Association in recognition of outstanding work and advocacy effort; a Certificate of Recognition as a Bank of America Student Leader from the Petersburg City Public School Board; and a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition and appreciation for representing Appomattox Regional Governor’s School as a student ambassador with the Senate of Virginia.
Hankins is an active member of the Howard University Engineering Student Chapter, Howard University Alternative Spring Break Program and Howard University Student Leadership Academy.
As she continues her education, Hankins currently continues to give back and empower others by helping youth to be in a position to have a voice, by engaging the community to help improve its health outcome, and by being a public servant to the community.
