Each year we enjoy watching the Oscar nominees for Best Picture, not only for the hours of entertainment, but also for the lessons they convey about cultivating the best in human talent.
Here are three insights we’ve gleaned from this year’s nominees, and the ultimate winner of the 2020 Best Picture Oscar, Parasite:
Cultivating Habits: Your habits shape your future. In the Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, actor Rick Dalton is faced with the reality that’s not only Hollywood changing around him, but the reality that he’s also changing - and not necessarily for the better. His choices have left him with fading career opportunities. His story provides a reminder that the way we treat others and the habits we cultivate or allow will shape the way our story unfolds.
Courage: Great missions call for great dedication. Sam Mendes’ war epic 1917 tells the story of two young soldiers, Tom Blake and Will Schofield, tasked with delivering a message to call off an attack that will result in the deaths of countless Allied troops - including Blake’s brother. Blake and Schofield face dangers and challenges they could never have imagined. Their journey shows the courage and fortitude we have isn’t always known until the situation calls for it.
Bold Vision: People follow vision. In James Mangold’s film Ford v Ferrari, Carroll Shelby (played by Matt Damon) is tasked with creating a Ford racing car that can unseat Ferrari from their championship at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France - a race Ferrari has won for years. It’s an audacious goal, but sometimes that’s exactly what people need to achieve greatness. This film, based on the true story of the Ford GT40, will inspire you to cast bold visions.
