TRANSPORTATION SECTOR DELIVERS THE GOODS
 
According to the US Department of Transportation, the transportation industry accounted for 9.5 percent of GDP in 2013. An employer of millions, jobs cross both the private and public sectors.

While not having the sex appeal of a google or microsoft, transportation is vital to American life, and the industry is pushing the envelope to deliver worldclass services. growing investment and a stronger commitment to technology make pursing a career in transportation a wise choice.
 
CSX TECHNOLOGY: APPLYING COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY TO BUSINESS
 
KathleenBrandt, president of CSX Technology, has found synergy in the application of computer technology to business.
 
“Computer technology offers an opportunity to apply the problem solving and business skills I enjoy to create solutions for real-life scenarios,” she says.
 
Brandt became CSX Technology president in 2013, starting as software developer and working her way up through the organization. In 2012, she stepped outside the IT world to take on a role on the operations side of the business, as assistant vice-president of operations integration. “By learning more about the daily opertions of our freight network and understanding the business challenges and opportunities from a different perspective, I was able to strengthen my leadership skills, build new relationships, and increase my familiarity with our business,” she says.
 
In her role as president, she manages a critical and complex business function on a daily basis while developing strategies for the future.
 
CSX Technology is part of CSX Corporation (Jacksonville, FL) one of the country’s premier transportation suppliers. The company provides rail-based transportation services in the eastern US on a network encompassing more than 21,000 route miles across 23 states and two Canadian provinces. The freight railroad company services customers across a broad array of markets that include energy, construction, industrial, agricultural, and consumer products.
 
CSX Technology provides information systems and other IT solutions that help drive the company’s business. These include visibility into shipments for commercial customers, custom applications, robotics, and other tools to assist employees in performing their jobs safer and more efficiently. Brandt earned her bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Jacksonville University in Florida in 1985. She was drawn to CSX because of its technology opportunities, the CSX team, and potential opportunities to grow, learn, and make a difference.
 
“I have been able to grow at CSX because I’ve always had an internal drive to work as hard as possible, take on new challenges, and learn everything I could in each position I held,” she says. “I’ve found that if you focus on your company goals and find where you can make a positive difference, it is amazing what new skills you will develop along the way and how much your personal career path will benefit.”
 
According to Brandt, it is an exciting time to work in the railroad industry due to the new technologies and record demand for its services. “We’re always looking for technology solutions to help improve safety and productivity, enhance service excellence, and drive our business strategies,” she says.
 
Mobile applications are a great example of how CSX is using data in a real-time sharing platform to create efficiencies. “Our Crew Life application creates a mobile hub for employees to more easily access the resources they need. Additionally improved service offerings and customer communications have improved through different tools like the ShipCSX application, which allows customers to easily schedule and track shipments,” Brandt explains.
 
She notes her job is both challenging and rewarding, as she recognizes the fast pace, the results, and the positive impact technology has on the company and the economy. “I enjoy the challenges of the complex work, problem solving, and logical aspects of technology,” she says. “The capabilities of our team continue to expand, from coding and business analytics to using different technical and business skills to develop new solutions or improve existing ones.”
