 McCARTHY: TRAINING FOR SUCCESS

Javelle Redmond, project MEP superintendent, works for McCarthy Building, a company that knows how to prepare its employees for the challenges that await them.

“In 2015, McCarthy was ranked in the top seven (out of 125 companies) by Training magazine for our innovative approach to training and development,” Redmond notes. “This was our fourth time being ranked in the top ten among the global training elite and positioned us once again as the top ranked training program in the construction industry. This recognition supports my feeling that our approach to personal and professional development is best-in-class.”

The McCarthy approach worked for Redmond when he first took to the field.

“When I first started working for McCarthy, it was a new world to me,” he says. “I had limited exposure to construction growing up, so I was always hesitant to make decisive field decisions. I also did not want to make mistakes that would create an issue for our clients or cause McCarthy financial or schedule setbacks. Fortunately, one of the great things about McCarthy is that there were coworkers and subcontractor foremen who took me under their wing and were more than willing to show me the fundamentals of building. They also taught me that no matter how experienced a person is, they will always make mistakes. The important thing is how you correct those and learn from these situations going forward.”

Today, Redmond manages mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection subcontractors to ensure that they complete construction projects safely, on schedule, and provide a quality product to the client.

“As a highly competitive person, I thrive off of challenges and being a superintendent in the construction industry is definitely an exciting daily challenge,” he comments. “Construction is not your typical eight-hour-a-day, clock-in/clock-out industry. It often requires you to go that extra mile and have a ‘do whatever it takes’ attitude in order to get the job done. Although stressful at times, you can always look back at a project after it is complete and know you helped make a positive impact in society.”

And he emphasizes the importance of old fashioned, non-electronic communication.

“My advice to college graduates is to never underestimate the power of verbal communication,” Redmond says. “We live in an era where technology is rapidly advancing and sometimes we become so reliant on electronic methods of communicating that we forget how to talk to people. I am not saying that electronic communication is ineffective or that it should not be used. At McCarthy, technology tools are playing an increasingly important role on our projects. However, I do believe that one of the most powerful tools you can use when trying to effectively collaborate, influence someone, get your point across, or understand another person’s point of view is to simply have a verbal conversation with them.”

McCarthy’s always looking for talented individuals. “Also, our McCarthy Intern Advantage program is the industry’s most comprehensive internship experience for future leaders in construction,” Redmond says.
