The Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University
of Maryland is a vibrant and growing department with 19
faculty, seven chaired or named faculty positions, 360
undergraduates, 140 graduate students and annual research
expenditures of over $18M. The Department seeks exceptionally
qualified candidates for the position of Department Chair.
The Department of Aerospace Engineering’s graduate
and undergraduate programs are ranked 8th and 9th respectively
in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Areas of
research in the Department include rotorcraft, space systems,
smart structures, bio-inspired microsystems, autonomous
vehicles, combustion and propulsion and subsonic and hypersonic
aerodynamics. The Department also has world-class research
facilities including the following laboratories: Space
Systems Laboratory, Autonomous Vehicle Laboratory, Alfred
Gessow Rotorcraft Center, Hypersonics Center, Composites
Research Laboratory, Advanced Propulsion Laboratory, and
the Glenn L. Martin Wind Tunnel. The successful candidate
should have a distinguished record in research, teaching
and service along with a vision for advancing the Department
and the field of aerospace engineering. This is a tenured
full professor position: Ph.D. required. Additional information

Chair, Civil and Environmental Engineering
Applications and nominations are sought for the position
of Department Chair. Interviews will be held during the
spring semester of 2009 with the position being filled
before the start of the fall semester of 2009.
Candidates should have a PhD in civil engineering, environmental
engineering or a related field and be eligible for appointment
at the full professor level with tenure based on a distinguished
record of teaching, research, and service. Qualified applicants
from non-academic backgrounds in consulting, industry
or government will be considered. Candidates should have
a clear understanding of current needs and future directions
in civil and environmental engineering and possess a commitment
to advancing diversity and interdisciplinary collaboration.

opportunity for growth and reinvention across all departments.
Sponsored research expenditures within our Department
for each of the past four years have been approximately
$2M. The Department is in the process of recruiting a
senior faculty member for its newly endowed Abdallah H.
Yabroudi Professorship whose responsibilities are to develop
courses and conduct sponsored research related to civil
infrastructure in emerging economies, as well as to lead
a recently instituted innovative undergraduate summer
internship program in Dubai.
