National Black MBA Association Selects Jesse J. Tyson as President and CEO

The National Black MBA Association announced the appointment of Jesse J. Tyson to serve as president and chief executive officer. After concluding a national search, the best candidate and answer for going forward was already in place.

“When the board made the decision to bring Jesse on as Interim in January 2013, we believed his experience and leadership would sustain us during a transitional period as we searched for a new CEO— and our intuition was right. However, admittedly, Jesse exceeded our expectations in the organizational advancements and outcomes of last year,” said Audrey Dillard Hines, NBMBAA board of directors chair. “Jesse has proven to be not only a visionary, but a results-driven executor. We look forward to his continued leadership with our on-going efforts of operational excellence, innovative programming, member engagement, and customized product solutions at the NBMBAA.”

“I am humbled by the vote of confidence, leadership, and support from the board. Collectively, and supported by a phenomenal staff, we have established a clear direction from a strategic plan guided with focus toward member-centricity, innovative programming, stakeholder engagement, and scholarship,” Tyson said. “To have an opportunity in one’s career to steward one of the country’s largest and oldest historically black professional organizations is an honor. But we’ve made our focus of talent development much broader than black, it’s about best. We know that we are competing in a global marketplace. Having had a chance to hear our members, our partners, and the trends of our industry, I can say with great confidence that the NBMBAA is poised for success now more than ever.”

Now widely considered a thought leader in talent and workforce development strategies and solutions, Tyson has earned the reputation as one of the nation’s global business experts having served in sales, marketing, operations, and distribution positions within ExxonMobil with responsibilities for Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the U.S.

Prior to his recent retirement after 35 years, Tyson led the Global Aviation business for ExxonMobil based in Brussels, Belgium, working across multiple industry groups in developing strategic solutions around customer segmentation, operational excellence, and shareholder return requirements with clients in over 50 countries and 500 locations across the globe.

Tyson holds a B.S. in economics and business from Lane College and an MBA from The Ohio State University. He has attended The Brookings Institute and The International Management Development School in Switzerland and served as an Economic Intern with the U.S. Department of State in Senegal.

Tyson currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University and as a Trustee at Lane College. He is also a member of the Orange Bowl Committee. Tyson has been named one of the “Twelve Good Men” by the Ronald McDonald House Charities and one of the “Most Influential Black Executives” by Black Enterprise.

Most recently, he received The Ohio State Business School Global Diversity Award and the 100 Black Men of America Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service. Tyson is often sought as an inspirational speaker to youth across the country as well as a guest university lecturer on globalization and the global energy outlook. He is a lifetime member of the National Black MBA Association.
