NASA AEROSPACE ENGINEER DR. APRILLE ERICSSON RECEIVES CHICAGOLAND ENGINEERS WASHINGTON AWARD
Dr. Aprille Ericsson, an aerospace engineer with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, is the 103rd recipient of the Washington Award, to be given at the Chicagoland Engineering Awards Benefit Friday, February 26th at the Chicago Hilton and Towers, 720 S. Michigan, Chicago.
The benefit is held during Chicagoland Engineers Week, February 21-27, 2016. Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week is the culmination of a year-round portfolio of student programs and competitions. E-Week is celebrated the week of George Washington’s birthday in honor of the first president’s background as an engineer and land surveyor
The joint banquet includes members and guests of the Western Society of Engineers; the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers; American Society of Civil Engineers; American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers; National Society of Professional Engineers; and the American Nuclear Society.
Ericsson is the first female, and the first African-American female, to receive a PhD in mechanical engineering from Howard University and the first African-American female to receive a PhD in engineering at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Born in Brooklyn, NY, and educated in the NYC public schools and later in Cambridge, MA, Ericsson received her BS in aeronautical and astronautical engineering at MIT.
The awards banquet will also recognize nearly 100 students for their accomplishments in a variety of STEM program competitions.
